Van Nuys, Los Angeles CA

Van Nuys and probably most of San Fernando Valley have always been LA’s underdog area, with a bad rap as an uncool bedroom community of the City of Angels. But time has passed, and things have changed, and this northern LA neighborhood in the vicinity of Sun Valley and Reseda has bloomed with the many things it has to offer to visitors and residents alike.

The history of how this neighborhood began is as colorful as the area itself.

Believe it or not, it all started with a “free train ride” offer in the Los Angeles Times all the way back in 1911. In said ad, it stated that people would be transported to the Van Nuys town site for a free barbecue to celebrate Washington’s Birthday and an auction of undeveloped parcels.

Of course, many people came. Who could resist such an offer? Interestingly enough, the whole lot of parcels were sold that afternoon. And so Van Nuys was born. Remember those days when you could simply hop on a train and buy a piece of land? Yeah, me neither!

Since then, Van Nuys has turned into a colorful neighborhood that hosts people from all walks of life, over 50% of its population is Hispanic, while more than 30% is white. There are also a smaller percentage of African American and Asian residents in the area. This “townsite,” which was once a bare lot full of tents of new landowners, is now the home to more than 100 thousand people.

Van Nuys may not have the glamour of Hollywood, but it certainly has its own personality. If you don’t believe me, check out the Japanese Garden “SuiHoEn,” where you will find some peace and quiet right in the middle of busy San Fernando Valley. This six 1/2-acre Chisen-Kaiyushiki-style paradise is designed to emulate the 18th and 19th-century Japanese strolling gardens. This is one place to regularly visit when we have to do some brainstorming on our most important Los Angeles SEO projects. One of the most wonderful features of this place is that it can be enjoyed all year round. The landscape was designed with a combination of flowers that provides a beautiful sight throughout the seasons.

Another Van Nuys gem is its airport. Yes, you read right. Van Nuys Airport, believe it or not, is filled with history. From first-time records to airport workers turned movie icons. Coincidentally, it is in close proximity to our Los Angeles web design office.

What’s in an airport?

Van Nuys Airport is no ordinary airport. Built in the late 1920’s, it was originally called Metropolitan Airport and since its opening. It was a place of historic achievements and innovation.

It was the home of three plane manufacturing companies at the time. As such, test pilots carried out non-stop races from Cleveland to Van Nuys, setting several endurance records of which the most famous was the seven-day flight; which was possible in an airplane curiously called “The Question Mark” that could be refueled mid-air.

The airport was also a witness to many firsts for female flyers such as Bobbi Trout, Amelia Earhart, and Florence Lowe “Pancho” Barnes.

Can you guess which famous actress was “discovered” at this very airport? She used to go by the name of Norma Jeane. Have you guessed yet? Let me give you another clue: rumor has it that her picture was taken for an article about war workers and this picture was the one that helped her land her first screen test. No idea yet? We are talking about no other than Marilyn Monroe!

Currently, Van Nuys Airport is a general aviation airport and one of the primary sources of economic activity for the area, contributing with more than $2 billion to the local economy. Additionally, in 2017 is the only general aviation airport that has a Level 2 reduction in the Airport Carbon Accreditation program, which recognizes airport efforts to manage and reduce their carbon emissions.

If these facts don’t speak highly of Van Nuys, I don’t know what would.
