What is

W3C Website Compliance?

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is a global organization led by Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the Web. Its mission is to help the Web reach its full potential.

W3C compliance means that the HTML and other elements of a website meet standards designed to make it accessible to all users, “whatever their hardware, software, language, culture, location, or physical or mental ability,” according to the W3C.

Why Should You Care About W3C Website Compliance?

W3C compliance is voluntary now and not a requirement to rank higher in Google … yet.

But think back a few years.

On April 21, 2015, Google started penalizing websites that weren’t mobile friendly. As a result, many businesses lost priceless search engine rankings because their web pages were not accessible to all users.

Now fast forward to today. Just like being mobile-friendly, W3C standards are designed to make web pages accessible to all. And support for W3C compliance has been steadily building up since 2000.

The writing is on the wall. We predict that compliance with W3C will be a requirement for all websites sooner than later.

That means the time to get W3C compliant is now, before you lose search engine traffic.

Can W3C Compliance Help You Rank Higher In Searches?
W3C-compliant websites are easily crawled by search engines and easily accessible to people with all browsers. It’s a win-win.

W3C compliance improves usability because web visitors are less likely to run into errors or bounce out. That means websites are displayed faster and flow better than websites that don’t meet W3C guidelines.

Errors in web page code can negatively affect how your site ranks in search. If Google and other search engines find invalid HTML or XHTML – code that doesn’t follow the rules – your website could be penalized or removed from their indexes altogether.

Bottom line: Just as it’s a best practice to develop web pages to be mobile friendly, you should also develop web pages to be W3C compliant.

Hundreds of SEO firms and automated scanners can audit your website and give you a list of coding issues to fix. But there’s no tool that can optimize your website for W3C from the inside and reveal all the flaws as a Google employee might see them.

That’s what our team members do.

We analyze your website from two perspectives: like a bot and like a human. As a result, we uncover flaws that an automated scanner can miss. Then we optimize your site to rank higher in searches.

W3C Website Compliance and Optimization from Over The Top SEO covers these 5 areas:

  • W3C compliance: What major coding issues, if any, are keeping your website from meeting W3C guidelines? Which issues are the highest priority to fix first?

  • Mobile compliance: Does your website function on smart phones and tablets? Are the links clear and workable? This optimization is both an art and a science, requiring a practiced human eye

  • Technical performance: Are your XML sitemaps updated and functional? Are your menu buttons easy to use? Is your site’s organization structure clear? Are your internal links all working perfectly and not hidden?

  • Website performance: We optimize your site’s page sizes, load times, and other speed factors. Because a slow website turns users away – and can damage your rankings on Google.

  • Content: Are keywords overused and unnatural? Are too many links on your web pages stopping customers from buying? Is your site hampered by animated graphics and WordPress “sliders”?

We take care of these 5 areas – and more – to help your website comply with W3C guidelines and rank higher in Google.
