Every week, a company reaches out to us after discovering that their beautifully built React or Vue application — the one their engineering team spent six months perfecting — is essentially invisible to Google. Pages that load instantly in a browser show up as blank or near-empty in Google’s index. Rankings that should exist simply aren’t there. The culprit: JavaScript SEO failures that the development team never anticipated.

JavaScript SEO is one of the most technically demanding areas of search engine optimization. It sits at the intersection of frontend development and search engine behavior, requiring practitioners who understand both how browsers execute code and how search engine crawlers process that code. Get it right, and your dynamic application gets indexed fully and ranks competitively. Get it wrong, and you’re effectively invisible — regardless of how impressive the UI is.

In this guide, I’m going to walk you through how JavaScript rendering works in search engines, the specific failure modes we’ve encountered most frequently, and the technical solutions that actually fix them. This is the guide I wish every frontend developer and SEO professional had read before launching their next dynamic web application.

How Search Engines Process JavaScript: The Rendering Pipeline

To understand JavaScript SEO, you first need to understand exactly what happens when a search engine crawler encounters a JavaScript-driven page. The process is fundamentally different from how a browser renders content, and that difference creates the conditions for most JavaScript SEO failures.

The Two-Phase Crawling Process

Google uses a two-phase rendering system. Phase one happens immediately: Google’s crawler fetches the raw HTML response and indexes whatever content is present in that initial HTML. Phase two places the page in a rendering queue — Googlebot will come back later with a Chrome browser engine to execute the JavaScript and render the full page. Only after rendering does Google index the JavaScript-generated content.

This means there’s a delay between when a page is crawled and when its JavaScript content gets indexed. In our experience, this delay averages 24–72 hours for new pages, but it can stretch to weeks for large sites with thousands of pages. During this window, your content isn’t indexed. If you’re publishing time-sensitive content or running a fast-moving product catalog, this delay can have serious business consequences.

Bing processes JavaScript differently. Bingbot historically had much weaker JavaScript rendering capabilities, though Microsoft’s engineering team has made significant improvements in recent years. Still, if Bing traffic matters for your business (and for many B2B sites it does), you can’t assume Bing will render your JavaScript the same way Google does.

What Gets Indexed — and What Doesn’t

Here’s what Google indexes from a JavaScript page:

  • All content present in the initial HTML document (server-rendered HTML)
  • JavaScript-generated content that Googlebot successfully renders
  • Meta tags and structured data that are rendered server-side OR injected into the document head before rendering completes
  • Links in both HTML and rendered JavaScript (Google follows both)
  • Images referenced in both HTML and rendered content

Here’s what Google may NOT index properly:

  • Content that loads lazily after the initial page render (infinite scroll without pagination)
  • Content gated behind user interactions that Google doesn’t trigger (tab clicks, accordion opens)
  • Content loaded via JavaScript APIs that Googlebot can’t access (internal APIs requiring authentication)
  • Meta tags modified by JavaScript after initial render (unless using the History API and pushState)
  • JavaScript-generated content that fails to render due to errors, timeouts, or resource blocks

The Resource Budget Problem

Googlebot has a crawling and rendering resource budget — a limit on how many pages it will crawl and how much JavaScript it will execute per site per day. Large JavaScript applications can exhaust this budget quickly, meaning Google renders only a fraction of your pages. The rest sit in the rendering queue indefinitely.

In our experience, sites with over 10,000 JavaScript-rendered pages often see Google indexing only 30–50% of their content within reasonable timeframes. This is why server-side rendering and static site generation are so valuable from an SEO perspective: they reduce the rendering burden on Googlebot and ensure complete, immediate indexing.

Framework-by-Framework: JavaScript SEO Best Practices

Different JavaScript frameworks present different SEO challenges and solutions. Let me walk you through the frameworks we encounter most frequently and what we do for each.

Next.js (React Framework)

Next.js is currently the most SEO-friendly JavaScript framework available, largely because of its first-class support for multiple rendering strategies. Here’s how we approach JavaScript SEO for Next.js applications:

Use Server Components as the default. Next.js 13+ introduced React Server Components by default, which render on the server and send complete HTML to the client. This is the ideal setup for SEO — Google receives fully-rendered HTML immediately. Only use client components when interactivity is truly needed.

Implement metadata API for dynamic SEO elements. Next.js 14+ provides a comprehensive metadata API that handles title tags, meta descriptions, Open Graph tags, and canonical URLs. These should be defined in each page’s layout or page file, not injected via client-side JavaScript. For dynamic metadata (e.g., pulling product titles for an e-commerce category page), use server-side metadata generation.

Use generateStaticParams for dynamic routes. If you have 1,000 product pages, use getStaticParams to generate them at build time rather than waiting for Google to crawl and render them dynamically. This eliminates rendering delay entirely for your most important content.

Configure Incremental Static Regeneration (ISR) for content that changes. ISR lets you have static HTML that’s rebuilt in the background on a defined schedule. For a product catalog where prices change weekly, ISR with a 24-hour revalidation means static-speed delivery with near-real-time accuracy.

Implement proper sitemap generation. Next.js doesn’t automatically generate sitemaps for JavaScript-rendered routes. Use the `next-sitemap` package or build a custom sitemap generator that accounts for all your dynamic routes, including those generated by ISR.

React (SPA without Next.js)

Pure React single-page applications (SPAs) without a framework present the most significant JavaScript SEO challenges. When we inherit a pure React SPA, here’s what we typically implement:

Implement React Snap or Prerender.io for pre-rendering. React Snap generates static HTML snapshots of your React pages at build time. For each route, it runs the React application in a headless browser, captures the rendered HTML, and saves it as an .html file. Googlebot receives the static HTML; users receive the SPA experience. This hybrid approach eliminates the rendering delay without requiring a full server-side rendering rewrite.

Use Helmet for meta tag management. React Helmet (or the newer `@react-ssr-manager/react-helmet-async`) allows you to manage document head elements from within your React components. This ensures meta tags are present in the server-rendered or pre-rendered HTML, not injected after the fact.

Configure React Router for proper URL structure. We frequently see React SPAs using hash-based routing (#/about, #/products) which creates crawlability problems. Googlebot does follow hash URLs, but they’re treated as separate pages within a single URL, diluting link equity. Switch to HTML5 pushState routing with proper server configuration to handle client-side routing correctly.

Set up server-side rendering if the application warrants it. If a pure React SPA is central to the business (e.g., a SaaS platform’s main marketing site), we recommend migrating to Next.js or implementing Express-based server-side rendering. The long-term SEO benefits justify the engineering investment.

Vue.js and Nuxt.js

Vue.js applications face similar challenges to React SPAs, with the same fundamental recommendation: pre-render or server-render whenever possible.

For Vue SPAs: Use Vue Meta to manage head elements (title, description, canonical). Configure proper HTML5 history mode routing on the server side. Consider Vue Prerender for static pre-rendering of key pages.

For Nuxt.js applications: Nuxt is the Vue equivalent of Next.js and offers similarly strong SEO support. Use `nuxt generate` for static site generation of critical pages, or configure SSR mode for full server-side rendering. Nuxt’s `useHead` composable handles dynamic meta tags efficiently. Configure `nuxt.config.ts` to include sitemap generation with all dynamic routes.
