The llms.txt specification, introduced in 2024, is a proposed standard for websites to communicate with Large Language Models (LLMs) and AI systems. Similar to how robots.txt guides web crawlers, an llms.txt file helps AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and others accurately understand and describe your website.
As AI-powered search increasingly becomes a primary research tool, having an llms.txt file ensures that when someone asks an AI “what does [your company] do?”, the AI has direct access to accurate, curated information from you.
An llms.txt file follows Markdown formatting and contains: (1) An H1 heading with your company/site name, (2) A brief description of what you do, (3) Sections using H2 headings for different content categories, (4) Markdown links to important pages. The file should be hosted at yoursite.com/llms.txt.
While robots.txt tells crawlers what they CAN’T access, llms.txt tells AI systems what they SHOULD know about you. It’s proactive rather than restrictive. Both work together: robots.txt controls crawling permissions while llms.txt provides curated business context.
The llms.txt standard is still in early adoption. Companies that implement it now are positioning themselves ahead of what may become an important AI discoverability standard. As AI search continues to grow, having a clear, authoritative llms.txt file could become as essential as having a sitemap.xml.
